Postoperative instructions/ days after surgery

Pain:

The pain (if present) is usually less, but the soreness is usually worse. Continue to take the pain medication as prescribed if necessary.

Swelling:

The swelling may be worse, and will reach its maximum three days after surgery. A warm, moist compress used at this time will help reduce the swelling. You should also begin using warm rinses (1 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water) 4 to 5 times a day for the next 4 to 5 days. This will help reduce the swelling and discomfort.

Discoloration:

There may be some discoloration of the facial tissues appearing as black and blue marks. These areas will normally turn yellow and fade within a few days. The application of moist heat compresses will aid in the reduction of the discoloration.

Numbness (Paresthesia):

In certain instances the teeth may be close to or in actual contact with the nerves supplying sensation to the lips, chin, gums, teeth and tongue. Sometimes, these nerves can be involved during the surgical procedure, resulting in a sensation of tingling, burning, or numbness. Usually, this lasts for only a short period of time. In a few cases, numbness may be permanent.

 Fever:

An elevation of temperature may accompany the swelling, and it is recommended that you check your temperature at least twice daily. If your temperature is 100° or more, take aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to suppress the fever.

Diet:

Again, nutrition is important, and you must eat. Be sure to drink plenty of liquids. You may advance your diet as you are able from soft solid food to solid foods.

Oral Hygiene:

You should rinse with the warm salt water solution after each meal. Begin brushing of the teeth, with special emphasis in the areas where the surgery was performed. If an oral rinse was prescribed, begin using it and complete it as directed.

Activity:

You should be able to go about your normal activities 1 to 2 days after your surgery, unless your normal activity includes strenuous activity. Any strenuous activity should be delayed for 2 to 3 days after surgery.
